Telling a Lie to Discover the Truth: Can a Couple Survive the Test of Truth?
The word “accident” allows the characters to shift responsibility onto circumstances. It is no longer a matter of denying the facts, but of reformulating them until they become morally bearable: a murder turns into a blunder, adultery into a momentary lapse, and betrayal into a misunderstanding. The lie is then addressed as much to oneself as to others. Each character constructs the narrative that allows them to preserve their relationship, their social ties and, above all, the image of their own innocence.
Because one of the characters is a playwright, this constant rewriting takes the form of a collective creation. Each character becomes the author of a competing version of the story, while every revelation redistributes the roles of victim, culprit and witness. The final metatheatrical turn thus suggests that fiction is not simply opposed to truth: it can also be the means by which we make reality bearable. The mechanics of boulevard comedy then become a metaphor for our everyday ability to turn our faults into stories without consequences.
