The Impossible Investigation, or the Little Factory of Social Imposture

Flagrant délire borrows its investigation, suspects and revelations from the detective genre only to methodically disrupt its logic. Instead of reducing uncertainty, each clue generates a new falsification: corpses, identities, evidence and official designations all prove interchangeable. This burlesque accumulation gradually shifts the play from police parody towards a more unsettling form of doubt. As the case progresses, it is no longer merely the characters who seem suspicious, but the very reality in which they claim to be acting.

Yet falsehood does not appear as a disorder threatening institutions, but as one of the means by which they preserve their authority. Fame stands in for talent, titles for competence, and the fabrication of a culprit for judicial truth. As soon as the investigation threatens the powerful, solving the case means imposing an acceptable version of events upon it. The final mise en abyme turns the police station into a stage and social functions into roles: behind the detective pastiche, the play reveals a world in which order itself rests upon a collectively sustained fiction.
