Lockdown Shorts by Jean-Pierre Martinez

Lockdown Shorts, a sketch comedy by Jean-Pierre Martinez for 2 to 16 performers.

16 characters appear on stage in pairs, in tragicomic situations that blend realism with the absurd and the fantastical. The crisis brought about by the Coronavirus, by suddenly depriving us of fundamental freedoms we had thought inalienable, will at least have had the merit of revealing just how fragile our world really is. From its most ridiculous failings to the more disturbing seeds of dictatorship, all under the guise of a public health emergency.

Cast: 16 characters. All roles may be played by either men or women. For 2 to 16 performers (men and/or women).

Play written in December 2020.
Premiered at the Institut Français d’Indonésie (French School of Jakarta) in May 2022.

From Civic Responsibility to Voluntary Servitude: What Place Is There for Responsible Freedom?

Lockdown Shorts does more than simply record the oddities of the health crisis: its sixteen short pieces gradually shift reality from everyday observation towards dystopia. Medical, administrative and media language becomes a source of comedy, revealing the violence and absurdity that official words can sometimes contain. Its flexible structure allows for anything from a succession of duologues to a collective fresco involving as many as thirty-two performers.

By targeting both bureaucratic excess and conspiracy-driven thinking, the play rejects the simplistic opposition between docile submission and irresponsible rebellion. It asks at what point a restriction accepted in the name of the common good turns into internalised servitude, and how we can preserve our own judgement when fear begins to govern behaviour. The final scene brings this question back to the theatre itself: faced with isolation and control, the shared presence of actors and audience offers a fragile experience of freedom that is both collective and responsible.
