Cheating Death: The Ultimate Sacrilege

The disappearance of the playwright suddenly turns everything that belonged to him into something negotiable: his body, his promises, his debts and, above all, his final play. Ignored while alive, the writer becomes after death a form of artistic capital from which everyone hopes to claim a share. His relatives are therefore fighting not only over a material inheritance, but also over the right to define who he was and to exploit his memory. Unable to answer them, the dead man seems entirely at the mercy of their self-serving narratives.

Yet his absence paradoxically allows him to regain control. Delays, revelations and reversals assign each person a role in a performance of which he remains the invisible author. The funeral thus becomes his final work: a comedy performed by those who thought they could profit from his disappearance. By staging his own death, he finally obtains what his career had denied him — an audience, recognition, and the power to turn others into characters in his theatre.
